Mediation Practicum
For those who want to supplement basic mediation training with hands-on experience, CDSC offers a supervised mediation program. Newly-trained or less experienced mediators are provided an opportunity to:
- Observe actual mediations
- Co-mediate with more experienced mediators, and
- Receive supervision and feedback to improve skills
You will hear different viewpoints, develop an understanding of when and why experienced mediators intervene, explore impasses and strategies for resolution, and develop skills to critique your own and others' performances.
Time Frame
20 weeks (consecutively,
or flexibly up to 6 months)
|

Session Overview
|
|
Mediation sessions are usually held during the daytime in various courts. Courts are unpredictable: some days there may be 3 or 5 cases, sometimes, none. For those who need flexibility, we can extend the schedule up to six months.
An Orientation Session at the outset of each cycle will give you an overview of the role CDSC plays in the courts and the community. Your practicum begins with observing mediation sessions on one or more mornings in court. When you and your supervisor agree you are ready, you co-mediate with your supervisor or another experienced mediator. You will have opportunities to meet with your supervisor and other mediators to debrief and ask questions after observation and co-mediation sessions. There will be a required mediators' meeting arranged mid-point in your practicum.
During your practicum, you will hear about seminars, conferences, supervision opportunities and other community activities available to CDSC mediators. You may apply to affiliate with CDSC as a volunteer mediator. Your name on our roster provides you with many benefits, so we ask at least one year's commitment.

Raves About Our Program
|
|
The practicum was a great experience... Our supervisor really took the time
to discuss cases and insure that I was learning at every stage. Just watching
how she interacted with disputants was an education. Her professionalism, courtesy
and humor made the experience all the more valuable. — Human Resource
Professional
Mediation practicum provided me with the support and encouragement I needed
to quickly move beyond the theory I learned in basic mediation training class
to become more comfortable and skilled as a mediator. —

Mediation practicum provides effective training for "real
world" mediation. The Small Claims cases, which I observed
and mediated at the Court, were plentiful and extremely varied.
In addition, regular postmediation discussions (among mediators,
observers and the program supervisor) challenged my mindfulness
and encouraged my ongoing skills development. Clearly CDSC is
committed to training mediators who value reflection in their
practice. — Business Entrepreneur
